A woman has filed a non-cognizable offence complaint against the principal of St Andrew's Convent High School at Mira Road for giving corporal punishment to her son on October 9. The woman alleged that the beating was so severe that her 12-year-old son is unable to walk unaided.

According to the complaint, principal Sangeeta Pereira was checking notes of the students last Friday when she allegedly hit the boy with a wooden stick on his upper left hip for not completing the work.

Alka R, the student's mother, said, "I was at work when my son called me to inform that he was hit badly by the principal. He was crying out in pain. He had been punished because he had not completed his notes. Doctors then advised him rest for at least three days. Now he is unable to walk properly."

She added, "This is not the first time that my son as been hit in the school. Earlier, a teacher punched him on his back, which had led to breathing troubles. I have warned the school authorities on at least three different occasions regarding hitting my child. But they continue to do so. Now this time, the principal has used a wooden stick. I am very upset with this behaviour. I called the principal twice, but she did not answer my calls."

While the principal remained unavailable for comments, school managing director Anthony Pereira said, "After seven days of the reported incident, the parents went to an NGO and the police, instead of approaching the higher authorities at the school. If the principal was not meeting her, she should have come to me. She must produce some evidence to prove that her son was hit by an object. We are here to hear parents' grievances."

Meanwhile, an official at the Kanakia police station of Mira Road confirmed the registering of the NC against Pereira.
