In a tragic incident, a 37-year-old man from Nahur died after his car caught fire following a road accident near Bhatan village in Panvel on Mumbai-Puane Expressway at 11.15pm on Thursday. His female friend, who was travelling with him, suffered injuries and is now recuperating in a Panvel hospital. Both worked as software engineers in a private firm in Pune.
According to the police, 37-year-old Rahul Chandrakant Haware and his friend Manisha Vasant Ingale were returning to Mumbai from Pune. As they crossed Bhatan village, their car hit a tanker from the rear.
"The tanker was also coming towards Mumbai. All of a sudden it took a right turn and the victims' car rammed into it's fuel tank, causing the fire," said Sunil Bajare, senior police inspector of New Panvel police station.
Haware, who suffered 99% burns, was declared dead in a nearby hospital. The tanker driver is on the run.
