Recently, on Republic Day, President Pranab Mukherjee announced the winners of the Indian Police Medal. Among the awardees is Pradeep Kumar, the only Railway Police (RPF) Officer from Western Railway and Central Railway together, to receive this honour. He was selected for the category of Indian Police Medal for Meritorious Service (2015).

A man of honour

Kumar, who started off as a constable in 1990 in the RPF, is currently an Assistant Sub Inspector at Andheri, and holds a reputation of cracking the whip on miscreants. Manish Rathod, Senior Inspector, RPF, Andheri Thana, who is Kumar’s senior, is a delighted boss and is all praise for Kumar. He shares, “I am so glad Kumar is a part of my team, as he is flawless and efficient, always on his toes and truly deserving of this medal. He has a clean track record; he has not received any negative accreditations from his seniors. In fact, he has always received rewards and awards from his senior officers in the past.”

Long list of achievements

In the long list of his accomplishments, a few that stand out are: he recovered one quintal of expensive telephone cable wires that were being robbed when he was posted in Gujarat; he rescued and participated in the rescue operations during the Mumbai floods (2005) and was also an asset in the bundobust after the Mumbai train bomb blasts in (2006).

Kumar holds an outstanding record of single-handedly investigating and solving 550 cases in a span of one year. Add to this, he is also an active member of the crime detection team, and has been able to solve several criminal cases. In the past few years, he has busted few e-ticketing scams worth lakhs of rupees and arrested many touts and illegal e-ticket agents.

Anand Vijay Jha, Senior Divisional Security Commissioner (RPF), Western Railway, shares, “Pradeep Kumar is unassuming, yet an efficient officer who has risen from the rank of a constable due to his hard work and dedication.”

Pradeep Kumar is rather shy and when we spoke to him, he only shared, “I am extremely happy that I received this award and I have been able to work efficiently due to the assistance of all my seniors and the support of my humble colleagues.”
