Monsoon has finally arrived. There was a downpour on Thursday night and again Friday morning saw another spell lashing the city. However, officials from the Indian Meteorological Department said regular rains will set in over the next week with a couple of spells of heavy rainfall.

"The rains have reached Mumbai, but it will still take some more time to set in in the interior parts of the city. Within the city limits, there will be some irregular rainfall for the first few days but it will regularise by next week," said VK Rajeev, director weather forecast, Meteorological Department.

In the past 24 hours, the suburban part of the city received 82mm of rainfall while the southern part recorded around 24.4mm rainfall. The rain has effectively helped in bringing down the mercury and giving Mumbaikars some much-needed respite from the heat.

The maximum temperature at Colaba in south Mumbai was 32.8 degrees Celsius while it was 35 degrees Celsius at Santa Cruz. The minimum temperatures at the two locations were 26 and 23 degrees Celsius respectively. This is the first time in the past couple of months that the temperature has dropped to 23 degrees Celsius.

The Bombay Municipal Corporation has reported that there were no records of traffic snarls as well as no reports of water logging in low-lying areas of Dadar, Parel, Sion, Kurla, Ghatkopar etc., due to the rainfall.

Third-year students of Mumbai University are also relieved as the monsoon has set in after their exams got over. "I just got done with my last paper and the weather has also become so pleasant now. I was really looking forward to the monsoon as the summer this year was quite unbearable. I'm really going to enjoy this rainy season," said Nida Chakraborty, a student of psychology and sociology.
