BJP, Sena, Cong suggest names for GTB Nagar station, even before Monorail Phase-2 could hit tracks
Even before the second phase of Monorail services between Wadala and Jacob Circle could start, BJP and Sena along with Congress have suggested alternate names for the GTB Nagar Monorail station at Sion Koliwada.
While State Finance Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar from BJP has suggested the name as 'Trimurti Shiv' citing demands from the locals, Shiv Sena MP Rahul Shewale has suggested it as 'Hutatma Karuppaiya Devendra,' who was part of Samyukta Maharashtra Movement.
Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil from Congress, leader of opposition in the state, has suggested it as Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) residential colony citing it as a demand from local party unit who represents the locals of the area.
When contacted, Mungantiwar told DNA, "It's not my demand but demand for re-name of GTB Monorail station is from the locals. I must have got representation from the locals, and I have written to MMRDA to look into it, if possible. I get many respresentations daily, and it's my honor to help the general public."
While Shewale claimed, "It was Hutatma Karuppaiya Devendra who gave his life for the state, and my suggestion for Monorail station near Sion Koliwada to renamed was basis on the respresentaions received by the locals. I'll be very happy if our demand is fulfilled."
Further, Patil from the Congress claimed my suggestion is on the basis of the request received from the local party unit who I'm turn represent the locals. "I stand on the suggestion considering it is more relating to the area due to presence of MMRDA residential colony nearby."
Apart from this, the MMRDA that built Monorail has also got requests from several other political representatives to change name of Antop Hill, Wadala Bridge and Dadar east Monorail station from time to time. For Wadala Bridge Monorail station there are demands to rename it to Nana Fadnavis who was a influential minister of Maratha Empire during Peshwa's administration.
In case of Antop Hill Monorail station there is a demand to rename it to Shaikh Mishri citing it being more relatable with the locality followed by demand of renaming Dadar East Monorail station to Vitthal Mandir Monorail station.
However, MMRDA claims its priority for now is to start services of second phase thats underconstruction since 2008. "We have got demands from several political representatives, and permission for name change can be approved by state government but for now our priority is to start the operations of Monorail's second phase between Wadala and Jacob Circle," said a MMRDA official.
The construction of Monorail started in 2008, and ever since its operations for first phase from Wadala today Chembur starting in February 2014, it has been in news for constant breakdowns along with an empty coach of Monorail catching fire resulting in its services remaining suspended between November 2017 and August 2018. However, second phase has not started until now.
