The Matunga traffic division penalized over 1,000 motorcyclists and motorists for violation of traffic rules, during a three-day drive this week.

The maximum number caught were motorcyclists who did not use a helmet and the other common offence was illegal parking, said Sujata Patil, senior inspector, who co-ordinated the drive.

While about 600 were booked for driving without a helmet, 400 were fined for illegal parking.

"The drive was carried out between 11am and 2pm near Sion junction. A few were also pulled up for using dark films on the windows and some for driving without seat belts. Some of those intercepted were activists of political parties and they were fined," Patil said.

About 200 of these cases were registered on Friday alone. Interestingly, 15 police personnel were among those caught for riding without helmets. Some government employees were among those penalized and some government vehicles were also stopped for using dark films.

The drive follows a directive by joint commissioner of police Dr BK Upadhyay to conduct frequent drives and deal strictly with offenders.
