A 25-year-old man was arrested for allegedly raping a three-year-old girl in Kurla on Saturday.

The accused has been booked for rape and under various sections of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences act 2012. “Although he was caught before he could harm her further, we have booked him for rape as it involved a child,” said Dhananjay Kulkarni, deputy commissioner of police (zone 5).

The accused, Abdul Israel (25), took the child to watch a Bhojpuri film at Kalpana theatre in Kurla and sexually abused her. The girl’s parents, who are from Bihar, live in Kurla (West) and did small time jobs in the neighbourhood.

The accused, also from Bihar, is a friend of the family often visited their house. He lives alone in Mahim and works at a shop in Mahim dargah.

On Saturday around 7pm, Israel asked the girl’s mother if he could take the child for a movie. “After taking permission, he took her to the theatre and sat with her in the last seat, which was relatively secluded,” said Kulkarni.

Since it was dark and empty, he started groping the child and raped her after the movie started.

“There weren’t too many people in the theatre. When the girl started crying, people who were sitting ahead suspected something fishy. When they went to see what was wrong, they caught him in the act. They immediately informed the guard,” added Kulkarni.

The guards, along with the people, beat up the man and took him to Kurla police station. The police said the accused was drunk at the time of incident. They also confirmed that there were minor injury marks on the child.

Kulkarni said that the accused does not have any criminal record. “We will find out if he has been involved in any such activities before. From what we could gather, he seem to be mentally unstable and a pervert,” he added.
