Being forced by husband to sleep in the fields was one of the grounds of cruelty which the family court upheld while granting divorce to a 26-year-old woman. The court said the allegations the woman had levelled against her 27-year-old husband went unchallenged before the court, and it thus upholding the man guilty of causing cruelty to his wife.

As per the order copy, the couple got married on May 20, 2010 at Manorathpur, Uttar Pradesh (UP), and started residing at her in-laws' place in Sultanpur, UP. "Right from the inception of marriage, her husband and in-laws would mentally and physically harass and torture her for dowry. They, at one point of time, had also demanded an SUV vehicle. However, somehow the woman's parents managed to give Rs1 lakh and tried to save their daughter's marriage. But even then her in-laws were the same and they continued with the ill treatment," reads the order copy.

The woman also mentioned that her in-laws along with her husband forced her to sleep in the fields. "When she was pregnant, her in-laws went to the extent of forcing her to abort her child," the copy adds.

Finally on June 7, 2013, the man left her at her parents' house by giving her a false assurance that he would return soon to take her back, but he never turned up. When the woman's parents questioned him about his behaviour, he clearly told them that he would not take his wife back home until and unless his demands were fulfilled.

Finally, after waiting for a year's time, the woman sent a notice to him to take her back to her matrimonial house. "Since he failed to respond to the notice, the wife was subjected to immense cruelty, and hence she is seeking a divorce," the petition filed on her behalf said.
