Man kills wife in Thane, surrenders before police

A 27-year-old man in Thane killed his wife on Saturday midnight and surrendered before the police a couple of hours later.

@Accused in 3-day police custody

According to the Kapurbawdi police, the person was arrested and a case of murder under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered. The accused, Rajkumar Tukaram Chavan, was produced before the holiday court which remanded him in three-day police custody.

@After-dinner quarrel led to crime

The incident took place at around 12.30am in Chavan's residence at Azad Nagar in the Kapurbawdi area of Thane. Chavan, who is an ambulance driver with Thane SPCA (Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), had come home after meeting his friends. When he asked his wife for food, she allegedly refused to serve him. He immediately left home and came back a few minutes later. However, his wife then served him food without saying anything. After dinner, Chavan and wife had an altercation. This angered the accused. In a fit of rage, Chavan strangulated his wife and she died on the spot. Their six-year-old daughter was fast asleep during the incident.Around 2.30am, he went to the police station and surrendered himself.

@Accused had attempted suicide
When contacted, S Majumdar, Thane SPCA president, said: "We were aware that Chavan had family problems and his wife used to approach the police even after a petty quarrel. Chavan had attempted suicide at the Thane railway station two weeks ago. He was saved and sent home. He has not been coming for work since last week."

@They had filed for divorce"Chavan is a gentle person and he obeys every road rule while driving. When I came to know about the incident in the morning, I was shocked. We have even heard that Chavan and his wife had filed for divorce and the case is in the court. His wife had allegedly asked him for Rs3 lakh saying that she would not leave without the money," added Majumdar.

@Accused has no remorse
S Patil, police inspector, Kapurbawdi police station, said: "The accused has no remorse of killing his wife. The parents of the accused and victim were called as the accused has a six-year-old daughter. The body of his wife was sent to Thane civil hospital for post mortem. Further probe is on."
