Desperate times, calls for desperate measures, but it may land you in jail. The Mumbai crime branch has arrested a 28-year-old man for allegedly impersonating Union finance minister Arun Jaitely's son to increase the credit limit of his loan. The accused used a picture of Jaitley and his son as his Whatsapp display image as proof to convince the bank officials.
According to the crime branch officials, a complaint was registered after the legal head of Union Bank, Rajgopal Ramanujan, approached the Marine Drive police station.
According to the complaint, a senior officer of the bank got a call from a cell phone this month, and the caller identified himself as Rohan Jaitely, son of Union finance minister Arun Jaitely. The caller then told the officer that his friend Japjeev Singh had taken a loan and asked him to increase the credit limit. However, the officer got suspicious and, through the legal department of the bank, registered a complaint.
The property cell of Mumbai crime branch started a parallel investigation in the case. On receiving a tip-off that the caller impersonating Rohan Jaitely was Japjeev Singh himself, they later traced the accused and arrested him on Monday.
An officer from the property cell, on condition of anonymity, said, "We have recovered the phone that was used by Singh. He had saved his own number as Rohan Jaitley and used a picture of the Union minister and his son as Whatsapp display photo with a message saying 'Get Well Soon Dad'".
The officer further added, "During investigation, we found out that the accused had also taken credit worth lakhs of rupees from some casinos in Goa using the same modus operandi."
Singh was produced before a court which remanded him to police custody till October 9.
