The VP Road police on Thursday arrested a 19-year old man for allegedly abducting his ex-employer's 11-year-old son and demanding a ransom of Rs5 lakh from the family. The accused wanted to flee to his native place after getting the ransom money and lead a lavish life there, the police said.

The arrested youth has been identified as Rajendrakumar Harijan.

According to additional commissioner of police (south region) Pratap Dighavkar, around 6.15pm on Wednesday, 35-year-old complainant Chandrakumar Bhansali's son, Kalp, had left home to get food and did not return till 7.45pm. The family, along with relatives, made inquiries in the nearby area but could get no information about Kalp.

Around 9.40pm, Kalp's family approached the VP Road police and, while the process of lodging a missing person's complaint was on, the complainant's brother, Vikram, received a phone call at 10.01pm. The caller said in Hindi that the family should keep Rs5 lakh ready to take Kalp back, adding that if the money was not given, the child would be killed. The caller hung up saying he would call back in 15 minutes, said deputy commissioner of police (zone II) Sandeep Karnik.

A complaint of extortion and kidnapping a minor was then registered in the matter.

"At 10.31 pm, Vikram again received a phone call and the caller asked him to come with the ransom money to Lane No. 8 in Kamathipura, Nagpada. A police team in plainclothes then laid a trap at the said place. Kalp was found there, but there was no sign of the kidnapper," said assistant commissioner of police (Girgaum division) Rajendra Chavan.

He added that the boy then revealed that the kidnapper was none other than Harijan, who used to work with the complainant.

"Since Harijan would have seen the police handing over Kalp's custody to his uncle, he would have been alerted about the presence of the police at the spot and would have chosen to stay away," said a police officer.

"On receiving specific information, Harijan was nabbed on Thursday evening. He told the police during questioning that he had been unwell for the past 15 days and was thus not able to work. He thought of kidnapping Kalp and demanding ransom from his family and later settling down in his native place to lead a lavish life there," said senior police inspector Sanjay Kamble of VP Road police station.
