The Malwani police have arrested a 32-year-old man who had filmed a 23-year old college student while having bath and later demanded money from her. The accused has been identified as Irshad Vakil Shaikh, a rickshaw driver by profession.

According to the police, Malwani resident Shaikh had in 2012 secretly filmed the young woman, who then lived in his neighbourhood, while she was having a shower. "Shaikh accosted the woman when she was on her way to college and showed her the video on his mobile phone," said an officer from Malwani police station.

Shaikh then started blackmailing her into giving him money and managed to extract Rs30,000, said the officer. He didn't stop his demands even after the woman got married.

"Fed up with Shaikh's threats and demands, the woman informed her family about it and they approached us. Following her complaint, Shaikh was arrested recently," said the officer.

Shaikh has been booked under section 354 (d) (for stalking which interferes with the mental peace of a person or causes distress, fear of violence or alarm), 384 (extortion), 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code and section 66 (e) of the Information Technology Act for whoever, intentionally or knowingly captures, publishes or transmits the image of a private area of any person without his or her consent, under circumstances violating the privacy of that person. If convicted of all charges, Shaikh will face imprisonment between two and seven years.
