The state government would leniently deal with thousands of unauthorised constructions in the cities in the state after the specially-appointed committee under BMC commissioner Sitaram Kunte submits its report to the state government by the end of the month.
The state government had in June 2014 appointed a 16-member committee to suggest means of dealing with the unauthorised constructions in the cities.
The committee on Wednesday held its third meeting in Pimpri-Chinchwad after discussing the issue with municipal officials from the Pune and the Pimpri-Chinchwad municipal corporations.
After the meeting, Kunte told the media that the government is inclined to providing relief to people rather than undertaking demolition drives. It may be recalled that while appointing the committee, former chief minister Prithviraj Chavan had made it clear to the media that it was not feasible to demolish thousands of structures.
Kunte on Wednesday said that the committee has studied the issue of unauthorised constructions in all the municipal corporations and has discussed the issue with the general public, elected representatives, town planning experts and legal experts. Kunte said that the committee has also studied the legislation and rules passed by Gujarat state government in 2011 for dealing with unauthorised constructions.
The issue of unauthorised constructions had came to the fore after several instances of building collapses across the state, most notably last year's building collapse in Mumbra that claimed 74 lives. In response, the state government appointed a secretary-level committee under bureaucrat Swadheen Kshatriya which studied unauthorised constructions in rural areas; while the Kunte committee was asked to look at urban areas.
