Starting today, domestic Piped Natural Gas (PNG) as well as Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) will cost more after Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) announced an increase in prices by 50 paise Standard Cubic Metre (SCM) and 85 paise per kilogram, respectively. The revision in prices is from the midnight of December 3. MGL supplies CNG to around 4 lakh vehicles including private vehicles, taxis, auto rickshaws and public transport like BEST buses.

Whereas, there are over 8 lakh households connected with PNG.

Therefore, "the revised CNG price will be Rs 40.82 per kilogram and base slab 1 of domestic PNG will be for Rs 24.42 per SCM in Mumbai. Also, increase of Rs 0.50 per SCM is being effected in slab 2 of domestic PNG prices too," read a statement issued by MGL. This hike in rates is applicable even in the areas adjoining Mumbai like Thane, Mira-Bhayander and Navi Mumbai. But the impact of prices vary at the adjoining civic areas due to difference in implications of local octroi or local body tax or cess rates.

Therefore, the revised prices including local taxes of CNG shall be in the range of Rs 40.82 per kilogram to Rs 41.58 per kilogram and of domestic PNG shall be in the range of Rs 24.42 per SCM to Rs 24.63 per SCM (base slab 1) in the municipalities adjoining Mumbai. The previous price hike of CNG and domestic PNG was from September 18 this year due to increase in Maharashtra VAT rates from 12.5% to 13.5%.
