The BMC began the road widening work in Khar (West) in December, but it’s yet to issue notices for the setback area to the residents.

Setback area is a patch of land within a prescribed distance from the property boundary on which the developer is prohibited from doing any permanent construction. Civic body can use the area for widening road or digging drain. In return, the area’s FSI is given to the developer.

Residents of PD Hinduja Marg have written to the ward officials asking how the BMC began work without carrying out a survey of the road and issuing notices to them. The civic road department has taken up the work to widen the road from 40 feet to 60.

“The road line was sanctioned way back in the 1990s. We have been asking them to issue notices to us but they haven’t done so. The BMC hasn’t even conducted a survey to see how many buildings will be affected by it,” said Hasim Shaik, a resident.

Aftab Siddique, chairperson of 33rd Khar ALM, said, “The work has begun without the approval of the traffic and coordination committee. The authorities seem to be in connivance with the contractor.”

He added that the civic body is to blame for the shoddy road work and fake bills submitted by the contractor.

Siddique also said that he is at a loss as to why the civic body hasn’t yet issued notices for acquiring the setback area.

However, the road department officials said the notices for the setback area will be issued soon.

“We carried out a survey in the last week of January and marked 19 buildings that will be affected. We have given it to the ward officials who are likely to issue the notices in this week,” said a senior official from the department without giving any reason for the delay.
