The special women court (of sessions court), presided over by Vrushali Joshi, on Tuesday, sentenced 37-year-old Lisbon alias Steve Miranda, who had brutally stabbed his 35-year-old wife in May 2012, to life imprisonment.

According to prosecution, Steve and his wife Bindiya Miranda resided at Neel-Gagan Society in DN Nagar along with their 3-year-old daughter. Steve, a hair dresser for southern star Nagarjuna, was known for his arrogant behavior.

On May 25, 2012 Bindiya was found lying in a pool of blood after fire brigade broken open Steve's bedroom that he had locked himself in. Steve was found lying on his bed with blood stained clothes, and Bindiya was lying on the floor in an unconscious state.

As per police records, Steve used to quarrel with Bindiya. "On May 24, 2012 when the couple was about to attend a farewell party, the two ended up fighting. Steve asked Bindiya to go to her maternal house, while he would attend the party. However when he reached the party venue, his friends asked him about Bindiya and his daughter. He then instructed Bindiya to reach the hotel. By the time they reached the place, Steve was already drunk. And as he was not in a state to reach home safely, his friends decided to drop him. Bindiya, their daughter and Steve's sister Preety followed them."

His friends accompanied him to his flat and made him lie down on his bed. Meanwhile, Bindiya, who knew Steve would again abuse her, asked his friends and Preety to stay below along with her daughter and said she would get her bag from the flat so that she could go to her house.

"However when she went into the flat, Steve started abusing her and a fight ensued around 1.30am. Steve had locked himself and Bindiya in, and in a fit of rage, stabbed her almost 20-25 times. When his friends heard a woman scream from the fourth floor, they realized something was amiss."

Special public prosecutor Kalpana Chavan said: "When his friends rushed to the flat, they heard Steve saying, 'I killed the b***h, w***e', and they informed Bindiya's brother Anand Chawla. Her family then reached the spot and asked him to open the door, but he kept threatening them that if they kept bothering him, he would blow up the house with a gas cylinder. Chawla's then informed the police and the police called in the fire brigade who broke open the door."
