Like every year, the four-day Kashish Mumbai International Queer Film Festival has received an overwhelming response from participants from different countries. This year, out of 45 countries that have participated at the festival, eight countries are participating for the first time.

The eighth edition of the festival will screen around 147 films from 45 countries which showcase the diversity in the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) communities. The countries participating for the first time includes — Armenia, Nigeria, Kosovo, Rwanda, UAE, Trinidad & Tobago and Aruba.

Speaking about the successful growth of the festival, Sridhar Rangayan, festival director, said, “It is good to see that more countries are participating every year. This year, the countries which are participating for the first time have similar LGBTQ communities issues and situations the way we face in our country. During the selection process, the story is important but it also gives platform to represent the issues faced in different countries.”

While the newly participating countries have mainly submitted entries for feature films, few have also sent entries for documentary, short films.

The theme for this year’s festival is ‘Diverse, One’ which explores the diversity of the LGBTQ communities. “This year’s theme is to showcase the diverse in identity of the LGBTQ community from across the world. It also shows diversity in ethnic, desire, love. We have managed to crowd-fund over three lakh rupees to oragnise the fest. Besides LBTQ community, many other people helped to raise the funds. Through crowd-funding many people think that they are making a difference by contributing or the initiative. Many people don’t know what the issues are and come to watch the films to understand them,” said Rangayan.
