The raging debate over who will be the next chief minister notwithstanding, it has emerged that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh is going to prevail over the decision as all the contenders are from Sangh background.

Soon after the assembly election results were out October 19, the BJP got the majority on its own in Haryana, while it fell short by 23 seats in Maharashtra. In Haryana, the party has chosen Manohar Lal Khattar, a former full-time Sangh Pracharak, for the post of CM. Khattar's appointment has brought to the fore the sway that RSS holds over such decisions.

M G Vaidya, former chief spokesperson for RSS, said the Sangh does not get involved in politics. However, the organisation's all-pervasive influence can be seen from the fact that its functionaries are there in all fields – religion, politics, business, agriculture, health or administration.

The main contenders for the CM's post in Maharashtra – Devendra Fadnavis, Sudhir Mungantiwar, Eknath Khadse or Nitin Gadkari – are all from RSS. Mungantiwar's father was a Sanghchalak.

Insisting that RSS won't be playing any role in influencing the selection of CM, Vaidya said, "Be it Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan or Dr Raman Singh in Chhattisgarh or Haryana Governor Kaptansingh Solanki, despite they being RSS men, the Sangh was involved in assigning them their present roles. Sangh is an organisation for nation-building."

RSS showed its dominance after the NCP announced its readiness for outside support to the BJP. When messages started making rounds that RSS has put its foot against availing NCP support, RSS Saha-karyawah Bhayyaji Joshi had made it clear that RSS does not decide on political developments and it was for the party to decide the same.

With Fadnavis and Gadkari, both from Nagpur, seen as front-runners, sources said, RSS will definitely have the final say. According to former MLA and Yuvak Kranti Dal founder Dr Kumar Saptarshi, irrespective of Modi or Shah or Fadnavis or Gadkari at the helm of affairs, RSS would be running the governments in Delhi and Mumbai.
