As torrential rains continued to beat down on the city for the second day on Sunday, a familiar sequence of monsoon ordeals assailed citizens. A total of 13 walls collapsed, 15 spots were hopelessly waterlogged for hours, 20 trees or their branches snapped, 12 electrical circuits shorted, and the commute — whether by road or rail — was hobbled to say the least. In short, it is a good thing you didn't have to venture out on Sunday, for you'd either have been wading or stranded. But cheer not. Weathermen have warned of intense downpours will Wednesday.

In the 36 hours from 8.30 am on Saturday till 8.30pm on Sunday, the city recorded 185 mm rainfall on an average, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. South Mumbai alone got 140mm rains over 12 hours on Sunday itself, inundating the streets at Hindmata, Parel TT, Gandhi Market, King's Circle and Sion.

In the suburbs, Shell Colony in Chembur, the arterial LBS Marg along the central suburbs, and Siddharth Nagar in Goregaon, were flooded, despite 111 pumps flushing out accumulated water. The authorities shut off a road overbridge in Ghatkopar to traffic, only to open it partially later in the evening.

A total of 13 wall collapse incidents were reported from across the city, including the balcony of a three-storey building in Kurla. No one was reported injured. The civic body had declared the building dangerous for habitation and issued an evacuation notice to the tenants, but they managed to get a stay from the Bombay High Court.

Schedule of local trains, which is sparse and hampered on Sundays due to mega blocks for maintenance, was thrown further out of kilter. Western Railway trains were running 25-30 minutes late, halting frequently amidst the block between Santacruz and Goregaon.

Central Railway revoked its mega block between Vidyavihar and Byculla on the main line, but continued it on the Kurla-Vashi stretch on harbour line. Trains were late by half an hour, and the tracks were flooded at many sites, especially along Sion-Kurla. The authorities dismantled a steel foot overbridge at Tilak Nagar in Chembur, at the eastern end of the station, stating it was rarely used ever since the Santacruz-Chembur Link road came up.

BEST buses were diverted on 48 routes in 12 different locations.

Airlines saw delays ranging over 5-25 minutes, but because of operational reasons, and not rains, the operators said.
