Frequent power cuts are common in some parts of Thane. However, now that the city has been included in the smarty city list, Thane MP Rajan Vichare has asked the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Corporation Ltd (MSEDCL) to increase the power supply so that the city to cope with rampant urbanisation.

In a meeting held with the MSEDCL last week, the MP had asked them to keep up with the ever- increasing power supply need of Thane. "With inclusion of Thane and Navi Mumbai in the smart city list, there will be more growth and urbanisation in these two cities," said Vichare, adding, "This will in turn lead to more industrialisation and need for electricity in these cities. Hence, the MSEDCL should up its ante in such a way that in the next 10 years they are ready to provide electricity on demand."

The power utility firm has proposed projects worth Rs249.93 crore under the IPDS (Integrated Power Distribution Scheme) for power distribution in the district – 1, 2, 3 region and Wagle Estate to make it a smart city. This includes five subcentres of 22/11 kilowatts in the city and transformation of 137.40 kilometres of overhead cables to underground.

Moreover, with the inclusion of Vashi and Nerul in smart city list, projects worth Rs200.56 crore have also been sanctioned under the IPDS. Thus, this means conversion of above ground cable into under ground cable, increasing the capacity of the current 22/11 kilowatt distribution centre, among others.

MSEDCL officials informed MP Vichare that the land at Airoli, which is going to have a new subcentre, is under encroachment. Therefore, they have requested him to free it from the encroachers so that they can start their work as soon as possible.

When contacted, Satish Karpe, chief engineer with the MSEDCL Bhandup region confirmed their contribution towards making Thane and Navi Mumbai a smart city. "We are adopting various measures under of the IPDS of the central government to make Thane, Vashi and Nerul a smart city," he said.
