Here's what Mumbaikars expect from new government

As the city prepares for a new state government, we ask few westcoast readers on the changes they would like to see in Mumbai

My expectations are high now that BJP is at the helm of affairs at the centre, state and the BMC. I look forward to the government allocating a larger budget for public transport in Mumbai. The BMC needs to deliver roads and a sewage system that can survive the monsoon. The administration should also eradicate encroachments on public space, be it on mangroves, footpaths or recreational parks. For a city that contributes nearly one-third of the country's income tax, it is time that Mumbai becomes a more liveable city.

Now that we have a new government after 15 years, here are a few things that I'd like to see: 1. Proper roads, not ones that are dug out. 2. More public toilets and if they have some ventilation, that'll be good. 3. While you build better roads, please provide footpaths for those who don't own cars. 4. We need turnstiles on all footpaths as annoying bikers have taken over the few footpaths that are left for use. 5. Turn the space under flyovers into something useful like a paid parking lot.

It's a pity that despite being India's financial capital, Mumbai has pathetic roads with severe bottlenecks that turn the daily commute into a nightmare for most of us. We need a complete infrastructure overhaul, something that can at least compete with Chandigarh, if not Shanghai! Also, Mumbai seems to be losing its 'safe city' tag lately. Citizen safety should be a priority along wth clean drinking water for all.

I'd like a pollution-free and corruption-free Mumbai. I hope that the new government focuses on de-cluttering pavements and improving infrastructure, concentrates on de-congesting arterial roads, and enhances the quality of life. The new government should realise the need to protect existing green spots, and think about ways to make ours a greener Mumbai.
