Heart transplant girl is discharged

After spending 15 days in the Fortis Malar Hospital in Chennai, Bandra resident Hvovi Minocherhomji, who underwent a heart transplant procedure, was discharged on Monday. According to her doctors, she will need to spend two more weeks in Chennai for regular follow-ups. She is doing fine and climbed a four storey building without any problem. Her heart's pumping efficiency has increased from 10-15% to 65%.

Hvovi's family thought they may have to go abroad for her treatment, but soon came to know that treatment was available in Chennai. Two weeks ago, they got her admitted to Fortis Malar Hospital at Adyar in Chennai.

This surgery was led by Dr KR Balakrishnan, director of cardiac sciences, Fortis Malar Hospital, who has performed more than 24 heart transplant procedures in Chennai. She got the heart tissue of a 27-year-old, a victim of a road accident, who was declared brain dead.

A commerce student, Hvovi was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy, a condition in which the heart becomes so weak and enlarged that the supply of blood to the lungs, liver and other organs is affected. Doctors told the family that transplant was the only option. The surgery cost about Rs 20 lakh.

On the condition of anonymity one of the senior doctors from hospital said, "The girl is absolutely fine and she can lead a normal life. During the hospital stay, she climbed the floors. She needs to stay for a couple of weeks for her follow-ups. We have already started her immunosuppressants, medicines that lower the body's ability to reject a transplanted organ."

He added, "Before the procedure, her heart's pumping efficiency had dropped from 60% to 10-15%, and several parts of body swelling up, Hvovi was barely able to walk, and was facing breathlessness."
