If a housing society or an independent resident fails to pay the water bill, the Brihnanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) ward office's water department employees visit the place and issue a warning asking them to pay the outstanding water bills or face disconnection of water supply.
However, the BMC has been continuously failing to collect the outstanding water bills, running in crores of rupees, from bigger agencies, especially those of the government. The BMC's defaulters' list for water charges has government agencies such as the Central Railway (CR) and Western Railway (WR) as one of its biggest defaulters.
As of March 6, some of the outstanding for water charges are of the Chief Engineer, Mumbai Port Trust at Sassoon Dock (Rs 54.88 lakh), Deputy Engineer, MHADA at Bandra East (Rs 51.87 lakh), Chief Engineer Civil, Wadala BEST bus depot, (Rs 5.20 lakh), BEST Worker's Union Office, Dadar East (Rs 3.14 lakh), Executive Engineer, PWD office, Fort (Rs 58 lakhs), Executive Engineer, MMRDA, Monorail depot at Wadala (Rs 6.65 lakh), etc.
While the BMC also has other government agencies such as National Stock Exchange office, Bandra East (Rs 5.5 lakh), Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Court, Mazgaon (Rs 12 lakh), Principal Secretary Vidhan Bhavan, Fort (Rs 1.6 lakh) and Byculla Police station (Rs 18 lakh) among others as its defaulters towards water charges.
"The BMC has had correspondence at a higher level with the defaulter agencies. However, they have disputes over water charges and thus the amount has kept accumulating," said an officer from BMC's Hydraulic Engineering department.
BEST Spokesperson, Hanumant Gophane said, "BEST has paid its 50 per cent water bills to the BMC. While the rest are disputed."
Divisional Railway Manager of WR, Mukul Jain, said, "We do not have any outstanding bills. The amount pending which is shown is towards the sewerage charges. Railways do not have to pay for sewerage charges thus there is a dispute".
