Ramniranjan Jhunjhunwala College on Wednesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Sumaira Abdulali, Convenor of Awaaz Foundation, as it kicked off its 'Locality Management' project, a two-year initiative.
A Ghatkopar-based college is carrying out an in-depth study of the noise levels on one of the major roads outside the college and will propose interventions to reduce the levels in partnership with Awaaz Foundation.
Ramniranjan Jhunjhunwala College on Wednesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Sumaira Abdulali, Convenor of Awaaz Foundation, as it kicked off its 'Locality Management' project, a two-year initiative.
"We have earmarked JP Road which is close to the college and is a busy and noisy road. Under this project, the 10-member student team will regularly monitor the noise levels including during peak and non-peak hours and festivals. They will understand the impact of the noise levels on stakeholders and the public. They will then work on proposing solutions for reducing the noise levels," said Dr Baishakhi Dutta, project coordinator.
She further said that Abdulali will help the students through the two-year drive. "The idea is to bring about a change in society and such a project will help students study this important issue, and become ambassadors of the anti-noise pollution movement," said Dutta, adding that other nine such teams will take up other important civic and traffic issues.
Abdulali said that she was delighted that a college wanted to take up the issue with its students. "This intensive long-term noise mapping on this busy road which has a college, a Metro, hospital, residences and shops will prove to be an important study and with targeted interventions, noise levels can be substantially brought down," she said, adding that even other colleges should take up such projects in their vicinity.
