With an aim to create awareness about International Childhood Cancer Awareness month, which is celebrated throughout the month of September globally, Access Life Assistance Foundation, an NGO that provides a home for families with children battling cancer had arranged to light up the Gateway of India on Wednesday.

According to the NGO, lighting up the historic monument will help spread awareness about the cause. While Gateway of India was lit up in golden on Wednesday, CSMT station was lit up on Monday.

Speaking about the cause, Ankeet Dave, director of the NGO said, "The historic monument represents Mumbai, due to which we wanted to light up these iconic monuments. People are hardly aware that childhood cancer is represented by the colour golden. Through this initiative, we wanted to spread the message and ensure people know more about the disease. Our volunteers will be interacting with the people. This is the second year we are lighting the monument. Next year, we hope to get permission to light up other monuments in the city."

Huge crowds at Gateway of India and CSMT is also a reason for the NGO choose these spots to raise awareness.

Besides this initiative, the NGO has also launched a social media campaign 'Dishoom to Cancer' where, through September, people are creating videos.

"We received a good response for the social media campiagn. People were making videos and sharing them on Facebook and Twitter to raise awareness about International Childhood Cancer month," Dave added.

The organisation is also planning to arrange a bike rally on September 30 to take the campaign forward.
