Futuristic T-20 trains to undergo trials by end of September

The trial is likely to be conducted from September-end on the Delhi-Agra-Bhopal stretch. This is the same route on which India's fastest train, the Gatimaan Express runs at 160 kmph.

The first self-propelled train called the Train Sets, or T-20, is nearly ready for trials. The Integral Coach Factory in Chennai has completed manufacturing the body of this one-of-a-kind train, which doesn't require engines to pull. Sources said Mumbai is likely to get to first Train Sets and shall be maintained at the Virar carshed.

The trial is likely to be conducted from September-end on the Delhi-Agra-Bhopal stretch. This is the same route on which India's fastest train, the Gatimaan Express runs at 160 kmph. Officials from ICF said they are aiming to complete manufacturing of T-20 by September-end.

"Right now the shell and coaches of this train is ready with over 50 percent completion. We are hoping that by September end the train is fully ready and trials would be conducted," said an official from ICF.

Though nearly 20 per cent of the parts will be imported, this T-20 train will be in the Make In India bandwagon. This will be a one-of-a-kind train as it shall be self-propelled and would not need a locomotive to pull. The machines will be in the under-frame of this train.

Sources said one of the first routes the train is likely to ply on the commercially popular Mumbai-Delhi route. These futuristic trains are likely to replace Rajdhani and Shatabdi trains and shall be maintained at the sprawling Virar carshed, the first shed to be selected across the Indian Railways for the train.

These trains are similar to our local trains known as EMUs and can touch speeds varying from 160-200kmph. The approximate cost is around Rs 2700 crore. There shall be 14 train sets of 16-20 coaches each. They shall manufacture a total of 291 coaches. The aluminium-bodied train sets will be energy efficient and shall have automatic doors. There shall be AC chair car and sleeper coaches that shall include 1st class, AC-2 tier and AC-3 tier with rotating chairs.
