The government now plans to allow graduates from forensic institutes in Mumbai, Aurangabad and Nagpur to take up internships at government forensic labs, and will also ensure that they are finally recruited in government services. To enable this, for the first time, amendments have been made in the recruitment process, said director general of police (legal and technical wing) Meera Borwankar.

Borwankar, who is currently taking a review of forensic laboratories in the state, was recently in Nashik to assess the functioning of the set-up in the city. She has already visited Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur, and will go on to visit Aurangabad and Kolhapur next. During the visit, the senior officer took a review of the set-up and the requirements needed to upgrade the forensic labs in the state.

Borwankar said that earlier, students from branches of pure sciences were eligible for government jobs, but the rules did not allow forensic students to join. Now, however, the rules have been amended and new posts have been accordingly created at these institutes. Forensic graduates will now be allowed as interns at government forensic labs and the police academy.

The officer further informed that a new lab will be constructed in Kolhapur, where the land has been acquired for the purpose and Rs eight crore has already been sanctioned. Other than that, there were no plans of starting any new forensic institutes as of now.

About improving the conviction rate, Borwankar said that in most cases, the main responsibility of producing evidence lies with the police department. Pooled efforts of medical officers, forensic experts, witnesses, public prosecutor and others are necessary to improve the conviction rate, she said, adding that to achieve that co-ordination, there were plans to hold workshops with the Maharashtra police academy, Yashada and other agencies.
