A 30-year-old man committed suicide by consuming pesticide at a farmhouse in Vangaon after his employer allegedly raped his wife, the police said on Wednesday. The accused employer is absconding.

Vangaon, a village in Thane district, is located about 120km away from Mumbai.

The deceased, identified only as Mahesh, worked and stayed at the farmhouse with his wife.

On Sunday night, the owner of the farmhouse, Ravindra Raut, allegedly raped Mahesh’s wife at the farmhouse in the presence of her husband. Mahesh, who was upset over this, consumed pesticide a day later, said the police.

Mahesh’s wife has lodged a complaint that her husband ended his life after the employer raped her. “The employer threatened to kill Mahesh and his wife if they told anyone about the sexual assault,” said a police officer, adding that Raut is on the run.

Assistant inspector Ramrao Mhamunkar from Vangaon police station said that a case of rape and abetment of suicide has been registered against Raut.
