The Mumbai police have instructed the police stations in the city to get all housing societies to divulge the details of their tenants. Police stations have also been asked to see if CCTVs installed by housing societies are in working order. This move follows an alert received by the Government Railway Police (GRP) from the State Intelligence Department (SID) informing them about a 26/11-style attack planned by Pakistan-based terrorist outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) in Mumbai in the next few months.

The SID alert of last week states that LeT is planning to carry out the attack either at railway stations or hotels. The attack would involve eight to ten terrorists, including fidayeens (suicide bombers), who would enter the city through the sea route. The SID also said the terrorists would have Indian associates who would aid them.

Following the alert, all railway police stations were asked to beef up security in and around railway premises and were asked to seek assistance from Railway Protection Force for the purpose.

"We have served notices to all residential societies of the city asking them to provide details of flats being rented, their lease agreements and details of security guards and security agencies in charge. We have also asked about the status of the CCTV cameras installed in their premises. This is a regular exercise done by Mumbai police," said Mumbai police spokesperson and deputy commissioner of police, Dhananjay Kulkarni.

The housing societies have been warned that if they delay or do not cooperate with the police in this regard then they would be subject to prosecution.

Several alleged terrorists including top Indian Mujahideen operative Yasin Bhatkal, involved in the serial blasts case of 2011, had stayed in a rented room at Habib Manzil in Byculla. The room's owner had not informed the police about the tenants, a probe had revealed. This prompted the Mumbai police to instruct housing societies to furnish details about their tenants.
