While talking about dance, we seldom think of senior citizens. An event held on Saturday, however, changed that perception.

Hosted by Silver Inning Foundation, in association with Rotary Club of Mumbai, Rizvi Law College and Inner Wheel Club of Mumbai, the unique stage talent show for seniors – Umang – was organised at Birla Matoshree Sabhagriha in New Marine Lines. As many as 25 entries were shortlisted this year for categories including dance and singing, and the participants' age ranged from 50-79 years.

According to the organisers, Rs2 lakh were spent on the event, which had no entry or participation fee. With a houseful event, the organisers were out of passes within the first week of distribution. As many as 1,000 plus people attended the event, of whom majority were senior citizens. A workshop on the theme Senior Citizens Safety Tip was also organised for all who attended the event.

A performance by a group of four women focused on the message of gender equality, not only in the workspace but in homes as well. "It is not only important to get more incentives or enough pay. Women should also get more respect in any space. A lot of issues, such as forced abortion and home labour, are completely ignored. Or performance focused on that," said choreographer Sneha Shah.

Rajendar Paul (77), a doctor who served the army for 27 years, performed gracefully on a Bollywood number. She said, "My children are very happy that I am here. They say, 'Mamma, you must follow what your heart says.' Possibly, it is making me happier. It also helps me meet new people each time. I love the vibe and the warmth that people give to us."

Sailesh Mishra, founder of Silver Inning Foundation, said, "We have been organising Umang since 2008. Every year, the vibe is different. Our aim is to make our elders happy, showcase their talent and provide an opportunity for them to meet different people. Unlike other talent shows, there are no prizes for winning here. Everybody is a winner. It is amazing to see the level of enthusiasm among seniors to perform on the stage."

He also noted that this year, more women than men signed up to perform on stage. According to him, almost 80% of the participants were women.

President of the Rotary Club, Himanshu Dani, said, "This noble initiative for our elderly is close to our hearts. This has been one of the most sought-after events among our senior citizens, which they await every year. We have been delighted with the growing enthusiasm, innovation and impact."
