To clean the voters' rolls and eliminate duplicate names and bogus voters, the election commission has begun a campaign to link Aadhar data with their electoral database.
“This campaign does not contain just Aadhar seeding, but also aims at elimination of duplicate names from the database. It will also weed out the names of people who are dead and update details of people who have shifted to another place,” a senior official told dna, adding that it would help authenticate the details of the registered voters, eliminate errors and clean the database. Around six lakh people have seeded their details so far, he said.
This is being done under the Election Commission of India's (ECI) National Electoral Roll Purification and Authentication Program (NERPAP). He added that people could update their details either online or offline – on the Commission’s website or at the special camps to be held by them after filling the necessary forms.
The chief electoral officer, Maharashtra, also plans to conduct special door-to-door drives for the purpose. Later, the details contained in the electoral rolls will be authenticated using the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) database. Maharashtra has an Aadhar coverage of over 80%.
The total number of voters in Maharashtra is 8,35,34,880 – 4,40,77,571 men (52.76%), 3,94,56,271 (47.23%) women and 1,038 people belonging to the third gender.
“Compared to the census figures, the number of youth and first time voters in Maharashtra is less; the same goes for women. While the 2011 census pegs the state’s sex ratio at 925, the actual ratio of women to men in our database is 895. This shows that many eligible women and youth have not been registered as voters,” informed the official.
People whose names appear multiple times in the voters lists can also come forward voluntarily to delete them. Having over one registration in the voters rolls is punishable with a fine and/or imprisonment, the official added.
However, he admitted that since the drive to seed Aadhar details with the voters list was voluntary as of now, they were unsure of how many deliberate duplicate entries would be deleted.
