The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the city police arrested Prerna Arora on Friday, for cheating people to the tune of Rs 31 crore. Arora is the director of the production house KriArj Entertainment Pvt Ltd. The production house has produced films like Rustom, Toilet-Ek Prem Katha, Padman and Pari. Two more similar cases of cheating have been registered against Arora in 2018. The total amount of alleged misappropriation in all three cases is Rs 66.27 crore, the police said.

According to the police, since October 2017, Arora and other officials of her company conspired and induced film producer Vashu Bhagnani and his Puja Films to invest Rs 31.60 crore in movies like Padman and Kedarnath. They later failed to return the money.

A complaint was registered in this regard against Arora and others at the Juhu Police Station under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) section 420 (cheating), 120 (B) (criminal conspiracy) and 34 (common intention). The case was then transferred to the EOW for further investigation.

"Arora's KriArj Entertainment had made an agreement with the Gothic Entertainment Pvt Ltd in November 2017, to invest in Padman and had concealed this piece of information from Puja Films, with which they made a similar pact in January 2018. Similar agreements were made by the KriArj Entertainment with Puja Films, Gothic Entertainment Pvt Ltd and Padma Ispat Pvt Ltd with regards to the film Kedarnath," an EOW official said.

He added that analysis of bank account details of the accused has revealed that money procured from victim investors were not entirely used by the accused for business purposes. "While some amount of the money was used for purchasing immovable properties, some amount was used for buying expensive goods. A part of the amount was also used for leisure," the official said.

The police have recovered two PAN cards and three birth certificates showing three different dates from Arora.
