City crime branch sleuths on Friday arrested a man who allegedly murdered a 70-year-old woman Chandrabhaga Kharat at her Chembur residence last month.

The accused, who is a drug addict, had entered the house to commit theft, but ended up murdering the senior citizen when she spotted him.

The arrested person has been identified as Mukhtar alias Lala Khan, 32, a resident of Trombay. An electrician by profession, he mostly operates in the RCF area.

According to special commissioner of police Atulchandra Kulkarni, on December 23, Kharat was found murdered at Jeevan Sangram Nagar in Chembur. An unknown person had slit her throat and had fled after locking the main door from outside. RCF police had registered a case of murder and house-trespass against an unknown person.

"Kharat had come to Mumbai for her eye treatment only a month before she was killed. She was staying with her son. As Kharat was not rich, property issue did not seem to be the motive and neither past enmity or theft seemed to be the motive behind the crime," said additional commissioner of police, KMM Prasanna.

Chembur unit of crime branch then activated their sources and gathered information about those whom were seen moving suspiciously near Kharat's residence at the time of murder, said deputy commissioner MM Dahikar.

"We received an information that an electrician was spotted moving suspiciously near Kharat's residence at the time of crime. We then kept vigil on his movements and his background check revealed that he was addicted to drugs. He was then picked up for questioning and during sustained grilling he admitted of having committed the crime," said assistant commissioner of police, Praful Bhosale.

As per the police, Khan wanted money for his addiction and decided to commit theft at Kharat's residence while she was asleep. Khan was under the influence of drugs when he entered the house and while he was busy searching for valuables to steal, Kharat woke up.

She then cried for help after which Khan first smothered her with a pillow and then slit her throat with an electrician's knife. The accused has been handed over to RCF police for further probe.
