Western Railway, on Monday, began looking for a new location within the Mumbai Central station to shift its emergency medical room (EMR).

A story carried by dna, in its Monday edition, stated that EMR has been set-up inside the railway dispensary which is several hundred metres away from the suburban platforms. In fact, Nair Hospital is just a few hundred metres away from this EMR and officials agreed that it is illogical to take a train accident victim to the EMR for primary treatment and waste time when he can be directly taken to Nair hospital itself.

Speaking to dna, Ravinder Bhakar, chief public relations officer, WR said: "We are looking at a suitable location within the station premises to shift the EMR from its current location at the railway dispensary. But as of now all the three EMRs — at Mumbai Central, Bandra and Goregaon — will be made operational from Tuesday."

The EMR at Churchgate station also faces the same problem as it is located on the ground floor of the headquarter building — a road away from the suburban station — and bringing a victim here would take just as much as time as taking them to nearby Bombay Hospital.

Both WR and Central Railway were ordered by the Bombay High Court in November 2014 to start such EMRs so that victims can be given immediate treatment at the station premises itself before being taken to the nearest hospital.

According to WR's schedule, the EMRs at Mumbai Central, Bandra and Goregaon will be opened on February 2. The EMRs at Churchgate, Borivli and Virar will be opened on February 16 and the ones at Andheri, Kandiavli, Vasai and Palghar on February 26. CR has four EMRs. One each at Dadar, Mulund, Thane and Panvel.

As per the agreement between the private firms that will provide the manpower and the railways, each EMR will be manned in three shifts of 8 hours each. Each team will comprise one Medical Council of India-recognized MBBS Doctor, one Qualified Male/Female Nurse and one 10th pass attendant/helper (Male). Their mandate will be to provide emergency medical care to persons injured due to untoward incidents happening in railway premises like falling from or hitting by trains, the railway agreement states.
