Dombivli resident, Vivek Pachpande, was born blind but this does not deter him ever. He has been interested in studies all through and has completed his Masters in Philosophy and was planning to continue with his Phd, when he was selected for the Commonwealth fellowship, that is organised by the British government. He is the first visually impaired to be seletced from India, for this fellowship programme.

Pachpande always dreamed of going abroad to complete his higher studies. His dream has been fulfilled through his own hardwork. Only 25 students have been chosen from across the country, for this fellowship, although this was his second attempt at getting a fellowship programme, everyone, including his family, is excited about the opportunity.

Their financial position is also not very stable and despite that he has been excelling in his studies and finding a way out to continue his education. "I am proud of my brother and his achievements. He is a role model for all of us including our neighbours, who had all gathered to celebrate this opportunity and bid him farewell," said Durgesh Pachpande, brother of Vivek.

Pachpande, left for Scotland on September 10, as his term began from September 14. "The first day was an unique experience, I was overwhelmed by the hospitality of all the students and staff there. I also came to know that the library within the university is huge and considered one amongst the popular ones in the country. They also have a digital library which would be a boon for me," said Pachpande.

Purely on the basis of merit, Pachpande has been selected for a four-year fellowship programme at Edinburgh University in Scotland. This is an annual fellowship provided by the British government for the commonwealth countries. In his second attempt, he managed to get through the selection. During his M Phil studies, he managed to read and learn, with the help of the screen reader app on his smart phone. This app would scan the text and read out the contents, which was very helpful although time consuming for Pachpande. He hopes that there might be some easier provisions at the United Kingdom for him.
