Controversial cop, assistant commissioner Vasant Dhoble’s actions — raids and arrests at nightspots — will be made into a film titled ‘Dee Saturday Night’ about Mumbai’s nightlife..
Now posted at the Vakola division of Mumbai Police, Dhoble made headlines during his previous stint with the Social Service Branch, often raiding pubs for allegedly flouting rules, cracking down at juice centres that operate from the pavements and allegedly assaulting those patronising such joints.
To be directed and produced by Jaiprakash, Arif Zakaria will play Dhoble in the film, charging around with a hockey stick in hand — a trademark of Dhoble.
The hockey stick-wielding image of the policeman was first painted when Dhoble allegedly targeted the wayside juice centre in Vile Parle.
The 2-hour-and-20-minute film is slated for release by the end of this month.
Speaking to DNA, Jaiprakash refused to say whether Dhoble’s character in the film was a positive or negative one. “He has received appreciation and also drawn flak for his work,” said Jaiprakash.
It is learnt that a few lawyers have objected to the manner in which Zakaria has used the hockey stick to assault bar dancers in the film. Jaiprakash said the movie is yet to be reviewed by the censor board. “The board is the authority to decide on these matters and I will remove scenes they feel are objectionable,” he said.
When DNA sought Dhoble’s reaction about the film being made on him, he seemed unfazed. “I have no idea what this is all about and I’m in no way concerned,” said Dhoble. “Anyway, if it’s based on media reports, there’s no reason for me to be answerable to anyone.”
