The death of a Bharat Nagar resident has once again brought to the fore the infighting within the residents regarding the ongoing redevelopment there. The deceased has been identified as Zafar Sheikh. The residents refused to take Sheikh's body. They alleged that the post-mortem report did not mention the exact cause of the death.

While the umbrella co-operative housing society Basera CHS claims that it wants redevelopment of all, residents of plot number 7, who have formed the Khwaja Gareeb Nawaz (KGN) society want the Slum Rehabilitation tag to go. They want it to be developed as per MHADA rules. Meanwhile, the developer HDIL claims that the issues between the members won't affect the completion of the scheme.

Nearly 913 people who earlier resided at Bandra West were shifted on this huge parcel of land in Bandra-Kurla Complex way back in 1976. Residents said that in 1996 Basera CHS signed an agreement with a developer for redevelopment under SRA but it didn't materialise. In 2005-06 HDIL came into picture. On Friday, Syed Rafique, a resident of plot number 7 released a video alleging that HDIL, Omkar and Basera CHS were mishandling the project. A group of men attacked Rafique on Friday night and in the incident Sheikh allegedly got killed.

HDIL has all the requisite approvals from various Authorities and Courts for initiation and completion of the Bharat Nagar SRA Scheme. Omkar's statement said: "We have no role with the said project mentioned by the individual in the video. Hence see no connect here and neither our name is mentioned in the FIR."

Tarik Khan, a member of KGN claimed that they do not come under SRA. "We gave rent to MHADA. Hence, redevelopment should be done as per MHADA rules." While Basera CHS chief promoter Maulana Bashir said that he was elected only 10 months ago. "I want to hold meeting with all the residents. There are too many legal battles. I am ready to sit with everyone, including the developer and sort out things but there has been no reply from their side," Bashir said.
