A family of a custodial death victim from Parbhani district Maharashtra — including his brother, wife and his two children — attempted to commit suicide during the Republic Day Parade at Shivaji Park in Dadar on Friday. The Shivaji Park police detained the family, but later in the day, let them off with just a diary entry of the incident.
According to the police, the incident took place at around 8 am as the Republic Day Parade was underway. The brother of the victim, Shamsher Khan (33), his wife and his two children came to the event with a plan to self-immolate, but the police personnel spotted them and foiled their attempt.
“When we inquired why they did so, the family claimed that they were seeking justice and wanted to self-immolate in front of the Governor of Maharashtra. We have found a bottle of kerosene and a knife from them which we have seized. No case has been registered in the matter,” said a police officer from Shivaji Park police station.
