Indian Mujahideen operative and 13/7 blast case accused Ejaz Shaikh was taken into custody by the Cyber Crime Investigation Cell (CCIC) of Mumbai police on Friday for allegedly sending emails at the behest of IM. Shaikh, 30, who went by names like Sameer, Samar, Sagar, Amir, Wasim and Ibrahim, is a resident of Galaxy Apartment in Ghorpade Peth in Pune.

The incriminating email

According to the police, on September 19, 2010, officers from CCIC came across an email forwarded to them by a foreign-based news channel. The email had been sent to the news channel by IM from al.arbi999123@gmail.com

"The attachment to the email contained the IM logo and some content written in Arabic. The email also contained information about atrocities on Muslims in India that could lead to communal tension. In the email, the outfit also warned of committing some surprising acts during the Commonwealth Games in India and bloodshed," said a crime branch officer.

IP Norway, SIM card Borivli

Cops traced the Internet Protocol (IP) address used to create the email account to Norway. The SIM card that was used to access internet belonged to a man from Borivli, the telecom company informed the police. The address provided and documents submitted to procure the SIM card turned out to be bogus. The mobile phone handset that was used to send the email had been purchased from a shop in Manish Market, the probe revealed.

The Crime Branch on October 30, 2010 registered a case against unknown person under the Indian Penal Code and Unlawful Activities Prevention Act.

Delhi cops nabbed Shaikh first

Shaikh was arrested by the Delhi police' Special Cell on September 6, 2014 for his alleged involvement in terrorist activities in Delhi. Shaikh's alleged involvement was found in Jama Masjid shootout and blast case of September 19, 2010.

Delhi cops also informed their counterparts in Mumbai about Shaikh's alleged involvement in the case wherein an email was sent by IM to foreign based news channel.

Crime Branch finally gets custody

While the state ATS first took Shaikh in custody for his alleged involvement in 2011 triple blast case in Mumbai, the crime branch got the man on Thursday.

"Preliminary investigation has revealed that Shaikh had procured the SIM card and had bought mobile phone by submitting bogus driving license. It is also learnt that it was Shaikh who had sent that threatening email to foreign based news channel," the officer said.
