The Mumbai Police had touted its e-challan system, introduced in January, as an evidence-based system since the challans issued online to the offenders are meant to be backed up with photographs or videos of the violations. But while motorists have begun receiving e-challans, there is no such evidence attached.
According to a senior traffic police officer, if an e-challan has been issued to a motorist for a specific traffic violation, then along with the e-challan, evidence of the violation, such as a photo or video, and details of the specific location with date and time of the violation, is provided to the motorist on the Mumbai Traffic Police website along with the challan. When introduced three months ago, the traffic police had also claimed that without evidence, e-challans cannot be issued online.
However, many Mumbai citizens have recently taken to Twitter and vented their ire in tweets tagging the Twitter handle of the Mumbai police. They have complained that while they have received e-challans for various traffic violations, the evidence for the same, along with details of the location and timing, were not provided along with the e-challan.
For instamce, Vignesh Santhanam tweeted, “@MumbaiPolice @CPMumbaiPolice hi, received an e-challan. Can I please have a picture of my default?” He had received an e-challan for halting ahead a zebra crossing and been fined Rs 200.
The Mumbai Traffic Police, however, claims that these cases are a result of technical errors. “We ensure that evidence is provided as we are working on evidence-based policing. However, we will sort out this issue as some technical error might have cropped up while issuing the challan,” said traffic police spokesperson Daya Sawant.
