Having been routed out in the assembly polls after contesting separately, Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP0 have now decided to put up a united front against Sena-BJP in the local self-government elections.

Thane and Palghar Zilla Parishad elections are due. NCP is now holding talks with Congress at the local level to take on BJP-Sena jointly. Sunil Tatkare, state NCP president, said party had left the decision on making alliance with like-minded parties to local leaders.

Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant told dna that the party had told local leaders to make alliance with like-minded, secular parties in the local elections. "The decision has to be taken at the local level; it will be approved at the state level," said Sawant.

"People have realised that the BJP-led governments at the Centre and state are not going to bring any 'Ache Din'. Farmers aren't getting good prices for their produce; ryots in drought-prone areas and those hit by hailstorms are still awaiting compensation for damaged crops. State government has announced a package, but there's no clarity. Now farmers aren't sure whether they will get compensation or not," Tatkare said.

He said if BJP does not fulfil all its promises, NCP would launch agitations across the state. He added that NCP had decided to be a constructive opposition party. "However, even Shiv Sena, BJP's alliance partner, is not happy with the style of functioning of chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and his government. Farmers haven't been provided relief package on time. Therefore, Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray has decided to donate the money he earns from his photo exhibitions to distressed farmers. We hope the government will do something immediately to help the needy," Tatkare added.

To mobilse the NCP cadre, the party is organising a two-day party workers workshop on February 7 and 8. "We have invited 500 party workers, including sitting and former legislators, members of parliament, mayors, district presidents, councillors, etc to the workshop, which will be addressed by Sharad Pawar saheb. The party will decide its future course of action at the workshop," said Tatkare.
