The much delayed citizen's proposal for building a check dam on Dahisar river, just as the river exits Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP), Borivali has finally been given a green signal. River March- a citizens group campaigning for the revival of Dahisar river's rejuvenation plan was pursuing this issue since past four years now.
"We had approached Art of Living (AOL) to help us plan this check dam given their expertise in this field and they submitted a detailed project report for permissions to forest department. Finally on December 28 the forest department gave a green signal for building Kolhapuri Type check dam," shared Gopal Jhaveri, Founder of River March.
Speaking about the benefits, Tejas Shah member of River March shared that the check dam will prove to be the first step to give a new lease of life to Dahisar river as it will help recharge the groundwater table and also aid in creating a good biodiversity at the spot where the river enters the city.
"Post monsoon there is very little flowing water in the area where Dahisar river exits SGNP and this also happens to be the place where washermen operate on the bed of the river and cause pollution. The check dam will ensure that there is around 800 meter stretch of water storage post monsoon, which will also ensure there is water collected in the river outside SGNP round the year," said Shah adding that they have also proposed that the stretch adjacent to the river could be developed for tourism.
Meanwhile Vikram Chogle, local BJP leader who has been supporting the citizen led movement said that that BMC in 2004 had even sanctioned Rupees one crore for the check dam project but the project never took off.
