After eight days in hospital, former deputy chief minister Chaggan Bhujbal was discharged on Monday and sent back to Arthur Road jail. According to doctors, during the time of discharge, condition of Bhujbal's health was stable and all his vital parameters were normal.

On April 18, Bhujbal was admitted in St George Hospital after he complained of toothache and chest pain. Although a controversy ensued after this, doctors later justified his hospital stay. Various investigations revealed that Bhujbal was suffering from multiple diseases. The politician was examined by five to six doctors from the departments of medicine, cardiology, ophthalmology, dentistry and critical care.

St Georges Hospital doctors referred him to the Government Dental College which is in the same campus. He was suffering from infection in the premolar — a tooth situated between the canine and the molar teeth. An adult human normally has eight premolars, two in each jaw on each side.

"Bhujbal was taken into the hospital since he was suffering from a premolar infection. We suggested a root canal and explained the procedure to him. After all the clinical examination and diagnosis, he said he will get the treatment later," said Dr Mansingh Pawar, dean, Government Dental College.

"Bhujbal has been suffering from multiple diseases including heart ailment, uncontrolled diabetes, enlarged prostate, hypertension and eye floaters, which are small moving spots that appear in one's field of vision. Doctors had examined him and provided proper treatment. He is also facing some breathing difficulty, and hence, as he was discharged from the hospital, we made arrangements of oxygen cylinders in the ambulance. However, he did not require them," said Dr Jagdish Bhavani, supritendent of St George Hospital.

Bhujbal has been lodged at the Arthur Road jail in connection with a money laundering case registered by the Enforcement Directorate in the multi-crore Maharashtra Sadan construction scam. Inspector general of police (Prisons) is carrying out a vigilance inquiry on why Bhujbal was taken to St George Hospital.
