A CCTV camera installed to prevent thefts two years back by a resident of Aarey milk colony in his chawl in Unit number 7 finally managed to capture something that left everyone stunned on Friday. It was not a thief but a big cat in the narrow lanes searching for its favourite prey- dogs.

"It was about 3.30am and i had just returned to my house after answering nature's call and suddenly I heard dogs barking loudly and initially I thought it could be thieves so I immediately switched my Television that is connected to the CCTV and to my surprise I saw a leopard walking in our lane," said Anand Kannan who after several thefts in his area installed four CCTV camera's outside his house.

An alert Kannan immediately alerted his neighbours as well to ensure that they don't leave their houses. "Since there are four cameras installed it captured the entire movement of the leopard, which had come here looking for a dog. It was interesting to watch that one of the dogs even managed to outsmart the leopard as it ran in the lane within seconds of the leopard entering it who could not catch it," he said.

Meanwhile in the morning the locals alerted Forest department officials as well who visited the area and advised the locals to be alert while moving late at night.

"Our staff visited the area which has around 500 people living there and found out that some of the narrow lanes have no lights and hence we have told them to install lights and not allow children to move outdoors late at night. The staff along with volunteers from Aarey Milk Colony, have also told residents about basic precautions to be taken to avoid human-leopard conflict," said a senior forest official from Thane forest division adding that there is no panic in the area and residents were aware that being a forest area there will be leopards around.
