Hard to imagine what a thief could take a fancy for. Burglars, who recently broke into a flat in Nalasopara, walked away with some jewellery, a high-end camera and also spirited away – believe it or not – the house owner’s nine-year-old pet dog!

The theft took place on the evening of January 7 when Vijaya Sharma, 54, was attending a wedding ceremony and her husband was to reach home late. More than the loss of the valuables, what has left Sharma heartbroken is her missing dog. She has been scouring the streets looking for her pet. When she returns home, she can’t take her eyes off the  the little bed on which Rony used to sleep.

At least two people broke into the flat.

“I’ve taken care of Rony since he was a pup. He was like a family member,” says Sharma.

A watchman of a neighbouring building said he had seen the leashed dog being dragged away forcibly. This watchman said they kept feeding him titbits of chicken while dragging him by the chain to which he was tied.

Sharma said the dog, who would not bite, was possibly dragged out of the house. “One of Rony’s paw nails was found dug into the sofa,” said Sharma.

“The value of the stolen cameras and jewellery was around Rs60,000. But what has hurt me most is that they kidnapped my little Rony,” said Sharma.

If that weren’t enough, she is peeved at the attitude of officials at Nalasopara police station. “They did not think it necessary to mention the theft of my dog. When I insisted, they flatly refused, promising to help me find the dog,” said Sharma.

A senior officer at the police station said that they have registered a case of house break-in against unidentified persons under sections of the Indian Penal Code.
