After three persons died when a boat capsized in the Powai lake on December 24 while ferrying eight persons to a houseboat parked in the lake, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Wednesday served show cause notices to the houseboat owner seeking an explanation on the mishap.

After the incident, the BMC has decided to crackdown on houseboats in Powai Lake and will conduct an enquiry on violation of norms, to avoid such incidents.

The Powai police had booked three persons, including the houseboat owner, for allegedly causing death due to negligence.

On December 24, eight persons from Ghatkopar were on their way to a houseboat owned by Newton Joshua in his boat, which was navigated by Abu Mandal. The boat crashed into a pole and capsized. Ateeq Khan, 20, Rasool Khan, 40 and Safiulla Zakir Hussein, 20, all residents of Shantiniketan Apartment in Ghatkopar (W) drowned. Five others in the boat survived.

"We have served a notice to the houseboat owner and have asked him to respond. We will approach the association to make sure that the houseboat owners are not violating norms. If we find that the houseboat owners are violating norms, we will bring the structures down to curb pollution in the lake and to avoid such accidents", said Vijay Khabale, PRO for BMC.

Maharashtra State Angling Association (MASA) the private club at Powai Lake had denied any involvement in the incident. Sayed Zeeshan, President of the club said, "We have no role in the case as the persons traveling on the accident stricken boat had illegally entered the lake with a member's boat, which is wrong, and adequate action should be taken in order to curb such incidents."

Assistant Inspector of Police Avinash Nadvilkeri, said, "We have registered a case of causing death due to negligence against Newton Joshua, Abu Mandal and Joshua's manager Mangesh. We are yet to make any arrests in the case," said Nadvilkeri.

Despite attempts to reach him, Joshua was not available for comments on the show cause notice served by the BMC.
