Although it has been a fortnight since the ban on plastic has come into effect, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has strictly directed that only the designated officers are authorised to take corrective action on the defaulters. The move is aimed at ensuring that the plastiuc ban does not become a mechanism for middlemen to extort money from defaulters.

Nidhi Chaudhari, deputy municipal commissioner (Special) said that the BMC will not only look into the efficient implementation of plastic ban in the city, but also safeguard the common people from being harassed.

"We will designate an officer in every ward who will be authorised to take action," she said.

All the 24 assistant commissioners have been directed to appoint an official to inspect illegal sale and use of plastic in their jurisdiction. The names of the designated officials will be listed on the BMC's website soon for the public to access it.

However, the BMC will also involve other departments to execute state government decision. "We have limited staffs in Market department and we will require help from other civic departments," said a senior official from the BMC's Market department.

Additionally, the BMC will involve other stakeholders such as the advance locality managements (ALMs) responsible for controlling the waste generated in the city.

"The ALMs can in turn involve the housing societies in creating awareness," said an official from the BMC's Solid Waste Managements Department.

According to the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPBC), around 3 to 5 per cent municipal waste constitutes of plastic and the city generates around 7500 MT tonnes of waste everyday. The plastic waste clog the drainage leading to water logging in monsoon.
