Ideas received from architecture students on the Draft Development Plan (DP) 2034 have impressed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) so much that it may consider framing policies based these suggestions.

The civic body has prepared a report on the suggestions from students for the DP 2034 and will release it during an event at the YB Chavan Centre, Nariman Point, on Friday, where three winning students will also be felicitated.

The event will be attended by the Principal Secretary of Urban Development, Maharashtra, Nitin Kareer, and Civic chief Ajoy Mehta.

Last year, the BMC in association with Observer Research Foundation Mumbai (ORF) undertook a project inviting suggestions from architecture students and urban planners on Revised Draft DP 2034 for a Mumbai makeover.
Berjis Driver, a final year B. Arch student from a Navi Mumbai college, who bagged the top prize, suggested that scarcity of open spaces can be solved by implementing a process of transfer of identity. At present, the city's open spaces are divided into gardens, playgrounds, parks and recreation grounds. Driver suggested that instead, all places can be termed as Public Open Space (POS) and be made accessible for every citizens.

Though their suggestions will not be incorporated in the revised DP 2034, the civic body may frame separate policies, if needed. A total of 250 students from 15 institutions across Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane, had submitted their suggestions. After several rounds, seven of these were shortlisted by a team of experts.

BMC had attracted criticism for its lack of transparency on the draft development plan. However, they later engaged city students in the formulation of draft development plan. These out-of-the-box suggestions will help the civic body to adopt best practices in city governance.
