While Malabar Hill Citizens Forum (MHCF) has been opposing the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) plan to set up a fire station inside Priyadarshi Park on Nepean Sea Road at Malabar Hill, BMC is preparing a proposal to construct its first 'Green Fire Station' at the same place.

The civic body claims that the fire station will be the first of its kind in the city, and it will mainly have bamboo structures.

Additional Municipal Commissioner, IA Kundan has directed the fire department to prepare a proposal for setting up an eco-friendly fire station.

The green fire station is part of the proposed 17 Mini Fire Stations to be set up throughout the city at the earliest.

These fire stations will come up on reserved plots, including the Green Fire Station at Priyadarshani Park on Nepean Sea Road. This fire station will be set up on 4,098.52 square metres area of the park.

According to an official from the fire department, the green fire station will have bamboo cladding and creeper plants around it.

"There will be no concrete structure in the fire station's building and this will be the first eco-friendly fire station in Mumbai," said P Rahangdale, chief fire officer of BMC.

In addition, the fire station will also have a training centre on fire safety. "We have also planned a fire safety training centre on the premises, where school children will be given training free of cost," said Rahangdale.

According to Mumbai Fire Brigade, in the last five years, it has already responded to 495 fire incident calls from Nepean Sea Road, that has a large number of high-rise buildings.

"Despite this, the vicinity does not have a fire station," said Rahangadale.

Susieben Shah, secretary of MHCF said, "We are not opposing the fire station, but this can be set up in a vacant plot which is adjacent to the park."

The civic body's move to set up an eco-friendly fire station might be an effort to win over Malabar Hill residents, who are opposed to a fire tender being parked inside Priyadarshini Park. The matter will be heard in court on Tuesday. However, the need for a fire station cannot be overlooked in the area, as it houses a number of high-rises but does not have a fire station.
