To give an insight into their duties and responsibilities as public servants, to sensitise them and increase their productivity, municipal commissioner Sitaram Kunte has arranged special ‘Ethics in Public Governance’ workshops for class-I officers.

The workshops spread over five days is being held in Panchgani at the Moral Rearmament Training Centre founded by Mahatma Gandhi’s nephew Raj Mohan Gandhi.

“We want to improve governance in the BMC. Good governance is not possible unless the concept of ethics is clear. We want to sensitise our officers since they deal directly with the public,” said Kunte, who was at Panchgani to address the officials and check the syllabus of the course and the facilities.

He added that the course is recognised by the department of personnel and training, Government of India.

The first batch of 46 participants, including assistant commissioners of administrative wards and chief engineers of different departments, are being trained for ethical conduct while carrying out their duties.

The programme is conducted by Arun Wakhlu, founding chairman of Pragati Leadership Institute Pvt Ltd.

“This programme provides a unique opportunity for officers of the BMC to spend a few days with each other in a different environment. The idea behind the programme is to reflect upon their vision, the current reality and the gap in civic administration, to tap their own inner resources for inspiration to learn from each other, to evolve a paradigm of ethical leadership and governance for themselves, to discuss case studies and research on public service issues and explore the balance between family and work life for wholesome living”, said Wakhlu.

Known for his training methods globally, Wakhlu has trained officials from the department of post and telegram, the railways and several batches of IAS and IPS officers.

Kunte was impressed by the training of the New Delhi Municipal Corporation which was a great success. He has decided that more than 500 civic officials will undergo this training in the first phase which will go on till February.

Junior officials will be sent for the training later.
